Setting up Hotmail on the iPhone/iPad or iOS gadget is a great way to get the email directly on your mobile device. It beats having to use the web front end and allows you to work on your email even if you do not have an internet connection. Now that Hotmail supports exchange sync, setting up the connection is easy to do. Just follow these steps and you will have your email everywhere you go.

Step 1

Start the iPhone “Settings” application. Once the app starts, scroll down until you see “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”. Select this option.

Step 2

This will bring up your email “Accounts” already set up on your iPhone. Select “Add Account...”

Step 3

At the “Add Account...” screen, select the Microsoft Exchange option.

Step 4

This will bring up the Exchange screen. Fill in the Email and Username with your full Hotmail email address (e.g. sample@hotmail.com), your Hotmail password and a description of what you want to call this account. Leave the Domain field blank. Select “Next” in the upper right hand corner when you are done.

Step 5

The iOS device will now think for a few minutes and bring you back to the Exchange screen. You need to fill out the “Server” option with “m.hotmail.com” and select “Next”.

Step 6

This will bring you to the final setup. Select if you want to also sync your Calendar and Contacts with Hotmail. Be warned that syncing Contacts with your iPhone and hotmail has been reported to cause problems for some users. Select “Save” to complete the setup. Some have reported that they get a request to verify the Hotmail password again. If this happens, just re-input the password and it the iOS device will start to sync the email.

This almost works for me! o2 cannot figure out the problem so I thought I would try looking on some forums.

I get to the last stage and I am asked to type in my password again - it then says my password is incorrect (it isnt) - any ideas?

My hotmail is a .co.uk address.

So when adding the server does it need to be m.hotmail.co.uk, or should I stick to m.hotmail.com please?

Many thanks!

- John

I know some people got:

Hello XX,

To get Hotmail on-the-go, you recently tried to set up a service called ActiveSync from your mobile device.

We are really glad that you’re interested, but we had so many sign-ups that we had to temporarily stop accepting new ones.

We’re making constant improvements and we should be accepting new requests fairly soon. Please check the following website in about two weeks to see what’s happening: http://www.hotmail.com.

Thanks again for using Hotmail–we’re really sorry about this delay.

Sincerely, The Hotmail Team

It seems not all accounts have been moved.

Didn't work. Did everything exactly as above, kept asking for password-that i know is correct, but denied it from working.

Thanks - worked first time for me, I just did e-mail, not calender or contacts, and seems much better than the "standard" Hotmail set-up, because it now synchronises deletions between iphone, Live Mail, etc.

Going to try contact and calender sync later today...

This is great! I can finally see my hotmail folders on my phone THANK YOU!

Your Hotmail password can't be too long. It should be 10 digits or less, or your iPhone won't recognise it.
